Second Escape è il lancio della pubblicazione, dallo stesso titolo, edita da Gli Ori, della prima estesa monografia sull’opera (dal 1998 al momento attuale) di Robert Pettena, l’artista nato a Pembury in Inghilterra nel 1970 e, fin dai suoi inizi, attivo a Firenze. Si articola in una serie di mostre e di eventi, incentrati su opere dell’artista dal 2001 ad oggi, dislocate in luoghi istituzionali fra i più importanti della città, quali Palazzo Banci Buonamici, sede della Provincia di Prato, il Palazzo della Prefettura, il Teatro Metastasio, Palazzo Vaj, attualmente sede della Monash University Prato Centre, nonché nello spazio espositivo di Dryphoto arte contemporanea che ne è l’ente organizzatore.
Il libro, le mostre e gli eventi che accompagnano il suo lancio sono a cura di Pier Luigi Tazzi che dell’artista dice: “Pettena non tende a creare o a ripensare modelli, quanto a cogliere dei momenti in cui si manifesta un senso …” e continua “Tende a mettere in scena quelli che gli Inglesi chiamano pun, giochi di parole, quindi, più che giochi di linguaggio, jeux de langage. Di quest’ultimi giustamente diffida ritenendoli trappole autoritarie nel momento stesso che si danno come autorevoli, lui che è refrattario ad ogni autorevolezza. E perciò mantiene sempre la dimensione del gioco, come scappatoia, più ancora che come uscita di sicurezza: second escape.” (Pier Luigi Tazzi, Second Escape, Gli Ori, Prato 2008).

Second Escape is the launch of a book with the same title published by Gli Ori, the first extensive monograph on the work (from 1998 to the present) of Robert Pettena, the artist born in Pembury, England in 1970 and active in Florence since the start of his career. It is also a series of exhibitions and events focusing on the artist’s works from 2001 to today, held in some of the most important institutional sites of the city, like Palazzo Banci Buonamici, headquarters of  the Province of Prato, Palazzo della Prefettura, Teatro Metastasio, Palazzo Vaj, now the location of the Monash University Prato Centre, as well as the exhibition space of Dryphoto arte contemporanea, the organizer of the initiative. The book and the exhibitions and events that accompany its release have been edited/curated by Pier Luigi Tazzi, who describes the artist as follows: “Pettena tends not to create or rethink models, but to capture moments in which a meaning is evident […]. He tends to stage what the English call ‘puns’, word games, then, rather than games of language, jeux de langage. He justifiably distrusts the latter, seeing them as authoritarian traps, since they present themselves as authoritative, and he is wary of anything authoritative. So he always preserves the dimension of play, as an escape route more than a security exit: second escape” (Pier Luigi Tazzi, Second Escape, Gli Ori, Prato 2008).
